Vinterläger Wilderness Experience

01/24/2025
Every Day until 01/26/2025

It’s been said that the more you know, the less you need. To this end, we invite you to join us around the fire for our third Vinterläger.

Vinterläger, or “winter camp,” is a three-day, two-night immersive wilderness experience: a setting to learn new skills, and sharpen old ones.

As a small group, we’ll eat food professionally prepared over the fire, and ground ourselves in the winter landscape of the Ozark Mountains. We’ll take a deep dive into the fundamentals of wilderness self-sufficiency.

Get your hands dirty honing knife, saw, and axe techniques, building strong shelters, kindling fire from friction, and preparing food on an open fire. We’ll trade ideas, laugh a lot, and work with the land around us in a reciprocal manner. Spots are limited, so don’t delay to sign up.

Please note, this event is for persons 18 years of age and up.

What's included:

3 days of wilderness skills training with primitive skills instructors
Unique, private walk-in camping area
3 high quality, professionally cooked meals from Chef Matt Cooper (1 breakfast, 2 dinners)
Limited Edition event swag

$455.00 USD

Journey Through Time: Kessler Mt. Rock City Geology Hike

01/25/2025 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
This event does not repeat

Take a Trip Back in Time—Deep Time!

Journey with us to the Fayetteville area, long before humans ever set foot here. Join the Ozark Natural Science Center staff and Chris Moyer, retired geologist and NWACC Geology professor, for an exploration of the geologic and natural history of Kessler Mountain!

First, we’ll dive into the foundational concepts of geology, unraveling the mysteries of Earth’s past. Then, we’ll dig deeper into the fascinating geologic history of the Fayetteville area and discover how geology shapes the land around us.

After our classroom discussions and presentations, we’ll lace up our hiking boots and hit the trails! Explore the Rock City and Fayetteville Traverse trails at Kessler Mountain, where stunning outcrops and breathtaking vistas will bring the earlier discussions to life. Witness firsthand how geology sculpts the landscape while learning about the local plants and animals that call this area home.

This gem of a location is not open to the general public, so don’t miss this unique opportunity to hike through the Rock City geologic formations on a guided adventure!

Event Information

Meet at 1 PM at the old Ozark Smokehouse building, now the Kessler Mt. Outdoor Classroom and Nature Center (1725 S. Smokehouse Trail, Fayetteville, AR 72701), for the brief slideshow presentation.

This fairly easy, roughly 3-mile hike will take approximately 3 hours. There are no steep climbs, once you get up the road to the trailhead!
