Arkansas’s oldest and longest-running live music venue and Dickson Street icon is celebrating its 90th birthday. George’s Majestic Lounge has officially been around for a full 360 seasons of great music – that is 90 wonderful years.
George’s opened in 1927 as a restaurant, bar and general store. It became a music venue in the 1940’s and in the 1950's, was one of the first integrated bars/restaurants. It was one of the first restaurants in Fayetteville to provide pizza delivery and the first bar to broadcast television in color. Though the building has evolved over the years (people remember watching the approaching trains from the Wisteria covered garden), it now has two stages but retains its rustic cozy character and stays true its history.
Many generations that have come through Fayetteville have fond memories of libations, music and a community built around George’s. Even with its history of firsts, George’s remains best known for the incredible musicians that have performed over the years. Every type of music and talent level has graced the stages of George’s, packing the house with diverse locals, unique visitors, and audiences of all ages. It's easy for musicians to form a kinship in the small intimate space and even easier to feel like part of the family when walking through the doors.
Being the oldest and longest running live music venue in the state of Arkansas, George’s is one of the oldest of its kind in the Midwest. It is easy to see why it was ranked by Consequence of Sound as one of the 100 greatest music venues in the USA last year.
Happy Birthday to George’s Majestic Lounge! We are lucky to have you in Fayetteville. Let the music live on and here's to the next 90!
