Popular Burger Joints in Fayetteville

The burger: an American food staple. A simple concept — ground meat, buns, toppings and condiments — yet everyone has a personal preference, and nowadays it seems as if there are a million variations. However, one thing will always remain the same: a good burger stays with you forever.

Being a college town, Fayetteville has a plethora of great burger joints, and we dare not describe any of them as “better” than another. Sadly, some historical favorites are no longer with us: Brenda’s Bigger Burgers, Mr. Burger, ROTC (Restaurant on the Corner). But their spirit lives on in the full bellies of those who came to Fayetteville, eagerly in search of the best places to eat, and then waddled out the front door declaring, “That’s the best burger I’ve ever eaten!”

From date nights to game days, we’ve noticed several restaurants that seem to stand out in popularity. From holes in the wall to food truck courts, from white linen to checkered tablecloth, you can find a delicious burger in most any restaurant in Fayetteville. Here are some of the most popular spots in town:

Hugo’s

Without a doubt the most popular burger in Fayetteville. Located at 25 N. Block Ave., between Dickson Street and the Historic Downtown Square, Hugo’s is a dimly lit burger paradise. Established in 1977, its menu remains true to its roots. Along with burgers, Hugo’s has an eclectic array of appetizers, entrees and desserts, including its well-known homemade french fries, Derek’s Special chicken sandwich and Grasshopper Crepes.

Though now a vegan, President Bill Clinton is known to stop by when in town. He and U.S. Secretary Hillary Clinton married in Fayetteville (at their first home together, now the Clinton House Museum), and the smell of Hugo’s still draws him in while visiting. We recommend the Bleu Moon Burger.

Art’s Place

No frills, just a straightforward, old school greasy burger in a dive bar. Art’s has been a burger hot spot in Fayetteville for nearly 35 years, and once you try one, you’ll understand why. They offer great food specials, the beer is cold and the place is always rocking on game days. Located at 2520 N. College, Art’s is a perfect hideout for shooting pool and eating like the locals. We recommend the Hog Burger.

Wes’ Bar-B-Q

Locally owned and operated since opening almost 40 years ago, Wes’ is a favorite of college students, because it’s close to campus and not overpriced — and they deliver! Coincidentally, Wes’ cooks up a mean burger that goes great with tater tots, and shares the same amazing aroma as their barbecue. Much to the delight of returning visitors to Fayetteville, the restaurant has stayed the same, because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Go visit this mom & pop business located at 14 S. University Ave. and order the Double Cheeseburger.

Farrell’s Lounge

This gastropub and upscale sports bar features a tap selection that rivals any on Dickson Street, and its menu features the best-named burger in town, the Hangover Burger. It comes with applewood smoked slab bacon, a fried egg, crispy hashbrowns and American cheese. Yes, you want that! Located at 311 W. Dickson, Farrell’s continues to lead the burger tradition in the heart of Fayetteville’s district for nightlife and game day excitement, Dickson Street. We recommend … wait, did you not read about the Hangover Burger?!

Feed & Folly

These guys do not mess around. The Banger Burger, with house made sausage and smothered in beer cheese, lives up to its name, taking our favorite food to another level. Located at 110 S. College Ave., each burger is creative in it's own distinct way. They also have English Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert. Seriously, you might want to wear sweatpants! We recommend the Shropshire Blue Burger (hand-pattied burger, imported shropshire blue cheese, caramelized onion, bacon and mayo).

Feltner Bros.

When you are feeling the need for an all-American burger experience, head to this family-friendly establishment at 2768 N College Ave.  They've been serving Fayetteville 100% fresh, never frozen burgers since 2009. Not only do they have burgers such as the Shroom Swissalaka or the Chili Ray Cyrus, but they also serve 100% beef franks, like the Benjamin Franklin and the Chili Bob Thorton.  Wash it all down with one of their delicious hand spun milkshakes and you'll be licking your lips for days thinking about that meal.
