Cycling’s wild side and the spectator-friendly sport of cyclocross racing returns to Fayetteville this winter. For the second year in a row, the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will be hosted at Centennial Park, December 9-13, 2026.
So, what exactly is cyclocross?
The hallmark of any cyclocross event is its obstacle packed racecourse designed with spectators in mind. A compact course layout puts fans right next to the action as cyclists of all ages tackle an assortment of obstacles designed to force athletes to dismount, throw the bicycle over a shoulder, run, and then remount – often in one fluid motion. Obstacles can include off-camber corners, steep climbs, shin-high barriers, arduous sandpits, and towering staircases. Held rain or shine, weather conditions only add to the unpredictability as the chance of wind, rain, mud, or even snowflakes make cyclocross races even more riveting.
Keeping in line with a unique race design, the cyclocross culture caters to both the serious and the silly. From bacon “handups” to donuts dangling over the racecourse, amateur races tend to welcome the wacky with costume cladded participants battling it out for fame and fun, but mostly fun. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of serious racing once the more disciplined competitors take to the course. Wrapped in sponsor covered lycra, the action picks up as pro level racers compete for top prizes.
What are the Cyclocross National Championships?
The Cyclocross National Championships is the pinnacle event in American cyclocross racing, which showcases elite, collegiate, and amateur athletes competing for national titles and the honor of wearing an American flag inspired National Championship jersey the following season. While world-class athletes will be competing, non-championship races are also included on the schedule and open to the public – the only requirement is a USA Cycling license.
Why Fayetteville?
In February of 2019, it was announced that Fayetteville, Arkansas had been awarded the 2022 UCI Cyclocross World Championships, marking only the second time that the world championships would be hosted in the United States and almost a decade since Louisville, Kentucky had first hosted in 2013.
Following the announcement, Fayetteville began the development of Centennial Park and a first of its kind cycling event venue. Opened in 2021 ahead of the world championships, this 228-acre mountain top has become a cornerstone of Fayetteville’s tourism strategy, attracting national and international cycling events while serving as a public park for residents year-round.
The 2025 and 2026 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships build on the legacy of Centennial Park, with athletes competing at the same venue that saw stars Tom Pidock and Marianne Vos win Elite World Championships in 2022.
