Fayetteville Welcomes the Wild World of Cyclo-cross
  • Event date: 2019-10-06

Typically held in the Fall and Winter months, International cyclo-cross racing comes to Fayetteville, Arkansas October 5-6, 2019 for FayetteCross! It’s a full weekend of unconventional bicycle racing at Centennial Park at Millsap Mountain - the future home of the 2022 Walmart UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships!

So, what exactly is cyclo-cross?

Cyclo-cross could be described as road cycling for mountain bikers, mountain biking for road cyclists, and Nascar for cycling fans. The hallmark of any cyclo-cross event is its obstacle packed racecourse designed with spectators in mind. Averaging 1 ¼ to 1 ¾-miles in length, the short track layout provides up-close views as racers tackle feature-filled courses complete with barriers, flyovers, stairs, hills, grass, and sand. Held rain or shine, the chance of wind, rain, mud, or even snow makes cyclo-cross racing all the more riveting.

A cyclo-cross event typically consists of several race categories based on a racer's age and/or ability, each race 30 to 60 minutes in length. The mixture of shortened race times on a shortened racecourse is a recipe for white-knuckle racing where men, women, and even youth feud for elbow room and the podium's top spot.

Keeping in line with a unique race design, the cyclo-cross culture caters to both the serious and the silly. From hot bacon handouts to donuts dangled over the racecourse, amateur races tend to welcome the wacky with costume cladded participants battling it out for fame and fun, but mostly fun. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of serious racing once the more disciplined competitors take to the course. Typically wrapped in bright colored lycra, the action gets fast and furious as pro level racers compete for cash prizes.

So gather your buddies, best costumes, and any bells, horns, or drums and we’ll see you at FayetteCross October 5th and 6th for a weekend of spectator-friendly cyclo-cross racing!
