History Happy Hour: Celebrating Dickson Street

It’s next to impossible to picture Fayetteville, Arkansas without calling to mind the city’s much-storied, always vibrant Dickson Street. To honor these few illustrious blocks running through downtown—and the special place they hold in the hearts of generations of locals, college students, alumni and visitors—the team at the Clinton House Museum is throwing a special Dickson-themed party.

History Happy Hour, one of the museum’s regular events, is a very casual gathering for the public to hang out and socialize at the first home and site of Bill and Hillary Clinton’s wedding. For just five dollars at the door on Tuesday, July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m., guests will receive a History Happy Hour pint glass, two pours of beer, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages while they enjoy music, trivia and great conversation.

To help conjure up memories of Dickson Street past and present, the museum staff is working to locate and borrow photos, t-shirts, CDs and albums, glasses, menus and other fun artifacts to create a special pop-up exhibit. Those who wish to contribute items are encouraged to bring them to the museum in advance or the night of the event. Everything will be safely returned to the owners.

Executive director of the Clinton House Museum Angie Albright says, “This edition of our History Happy Hour series is all about the fun history of Dickson Street. We can’t talk about Fayetteville history without talking about the street that brings together so much of what makes Fayetteville the place that it is--George’s, the University, Dickson Street Bookstore, the food, the music, the nightlife, the parades. It really is the place where the various threads of Fayetteville life come together. It is fun for us to celebrate its history, and we hope the community will help us tell that story!”
