Opening on January 13, 2022 and running through February 26, 2022, the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Fenix is the last regional stop of this specially-curated collection in Arkansas. A reception will be hosted on Sunday, January 16, 2022 from 1-3pm.
“Paper Routes” is a biennial exhibit organized by the National Museum of Women of the Arts (NMWA) in Washington DC, a group that happened to have Helen Walton as a founding member and participant in its board of directors. The statewide traveling exhibition is the only one presented in this format and is sponsored by the Arkansas Committee of NMWA as its sixth installment in their “Women to Watch” series.
Especially exciting to those familiar with the art scene in Northwest Arkansas, “Women to Watch: Paper Routes” is presently traveling with regional curation by Alison Glen – formerly a curator at Crystal Bridges. Artists at Fenix have been invited to exhibit alongside the regionally selected artists by Ms. Glen: Joli Livaudais (Little Rock), Kim Brewer (Little Rock), Linda Lopez (Fayetteville) and Suzannah Schreckhise (Fayetteville).
This exhibit, with its mission to elevate women artists and women’s voices in creative projects, will begin installation the first week of January. Fanciful bugs, dense sculptures, and delicate paper artistry will soon start to adorn the walls of the Millar Lodge on Mount Sequoyah, inside Fenix Gallery. As an example of work within the exhibit, Suzannah Schreckhise asks the question "Who Belongs on our Money?" The artist painted over 100 different skin tones to call attention to and celebrate how beautiful different colors are next to each other. Joli Livaudis, on the other hand, prints photographic images on Kozo paper and folds them (by the thousands!) with traditional origami patterns. Each piece is unique, highlighting the ephemeral beauty of paper itself.
“Women to Watch: Paper Routes” will be presented from January 13-February 26, 2022 at the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Fenix, 150 N Skyline Drive, Millar Lodge, Fayetteville, AR
