Members of the jazz ensemble will perform with Steve Wilson, a New York City-based saxophonist, recording artist and jazz educator. Jazz Times calls him “the consummate saxophonist-composer” and “one of the finest alto and soprano saxophonists of our time.” Wilson has brought his distinctive sound to more than 175 recordings led by such celebrated and wide-ranging artists as Chick Corea, Christian McBride, George Duke, Michael Brecker, among many others.
21 students in eighth through twelfth grade representing 10 regional high schools have been rehearsing weekly, studying jazz techniques under the tutelage of musicians including Wilson as well as professionals from Kansas City and local band instructors.
The All-Star Program was created to inspire the region’s young musicians to experience the joys of America’s original music, jazz. Additionally, the curriculum serves to enhance the programs that are offered in local schools and provide peer-on-peer collaborations, jam sessions, concert performances and career opportunities in music.
“This is a unique opportunity for aspiring jazz musicians,” says Robert Ginsburg, artistic director of NAJS. “By studying with professional jazz artists, students can both grow musically and learn professional skills. Their annual performance at Walton Arts Center has been a highlight for jazz lovers, and a chance for concertgoers to witness the next generation of jazz musicians.”
NAJS funds the Jazz All-Stars program in part through individual contributions to the NAJS Jazz Education Fund. Interested individuals can also visit digjazz.com to learn more about the program and donate.
Support for the Jazz All-Stars project has been provided by the Northwest Arkansas Jazz Society, Thaden School and Walton Arts Center.
