Lynda Coon is an historian of the later Roman Empire and the Early Middle Ages with a special focus on gender, religion, and the body. Her most recent publications grapple with the manuscript culture of the early medieval West, and how the parchment page preserves and even compels ritual action on behalf of its viewers. Specific subjects include mermaids vs. virgins, rainbows, and Christian basilicas designed to emulate Roman circuses. Coon serves as Dean of the Honors College at the University of Arkansas.
