Starting just 10 miles south of Downtown Fayetteville, our ‘Riverside Twenty-Five’ route begins from West Fork, Arkansas, and the banks of the West Fork of the White River. West Fork was founded in the late 1800’s as the timber industry, milling, and rail commerce prospered in the Ozarks. Settled in the river valley, the town is flanked by the Ozark Mountains to either side – meaning most rides from West Fork start with a climb (but end downhill!).
The route opens with a 4-mile scenic segment of blacktop paralleling the St Louis – San Francisco Railroad that snakes along the east side of town. The initial climb coincides with the first gravel, a 6-mile stairstep ascent up a series of three consecutive mountains – rewarding riders with beautiful Ozark Mountain landscape along the way. The climb is followed with a 6-mile descent down canopy covered gravel roads to the White River Valley below.
Although paved, a second substantial climb leads to another series of mountainous ridgelines – with the route traversing Snyder, Lingebaugh, and Bloyd Mountains along scenic gravel roads. As promised, the route ends with a welcome descent from the top of Bloyd Mountain down to State Highway 71. While ample shoulder, riders should take extra caution along this short section of shared roadway back to the parking lot.
Consisting of 60% gravel and close to 2000 feet of elevation gain, our ‘Riverside Twenty-Five’ loop is rated Moderate in difficulty – a good option for the avid cyclists looking for a couple hours in the saddle. With no services available on route, cyclists should plan to carry the hydration and nutrition necessary to complete the experience.
Where to Park
Alongside the river is West Fork’s Riverside Park, a popular spot for recreational activities and ample public parking. The park features prominent natural bluff features and is a well-known swimming and fishing hole – perfect for a post ride plunge on any hot summer day.
